How do I make a 911 emergency call?
You can use Sorenson VRS to make a 911 emergency call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All 911 emergency calls made through Sorenson VRS receive priority attention. Your 911 call will be immediately sent to the first available interpreter. You must be ready to give the interpreter your name and to tell where the emergency is located.Note: Although Sorenson VRS is an option for you to use in an emergency, you should keep a TTY available. During a power outage or an Internet connection failure or disruption you would not be able to use your videophone to make a 911 emergency call using Sorenson VRS. Your TTY should work in those situations if it is equipped with a backup battery.
Follow these steps to make a 911 call using the videophone:
Step 1 of 5
Using the number keys on the VP-200's remote control, enter 911 in the Dial field.
Step 2 of 5
Use the arrow keys on your remote to highlight the SVRS icon if it is not already highlighted.
Then, push the remote's Enter key.
Step 3 of 5
You will then be connected to the first available Sorenson VRS interpreter. Try to remain calm. There may be a short delay before an interpreter appears on your television screen.
Step 4 of 5
The interpreter will ask you for your name and the full address of where the emergency is located. Sign your responses as clearly as possible.
Note: When using SVRS, you must be able to sign your name and to tell where the emergency is located in order for 911 help to be sent to the proper location. However, when you use a TTY or dial 911 using a voice telephone, your location is automatically identified for 911 emergency services.
Step 5 of 5
The interpreter will relay your name and the address that you have provided as the location of the emergency and your request for assistance to emergency services.
The police department, ambulance, or fire station will respond to your request for emergency services.
The interpreter will remain with you on the videophone as long as emergency services stays on the line. If emergency services hangs up, your interpreter will offer to place another call for you before disconnecting.
