SVRS Helping You Keep in Touch This School Year
Sorenson Video Relay Service® (SVRS®) has had a tremendous impact on deaf culture, particularly on the deaf educational system. SVRS is a wonderful communication tool for families to keep in touch, whether their children attend a local deaf or mainstream school or a residential school far from home. Sorenson Communications provides videophones and SVRS, at no cost, to deaf schools and deaf educators across the nation.
New Jersey School for the Deaf (NJSD), received sponsorship from Sorenson to build two public videophone booths for the elementary and middle school dorm students. Lauren Clarke, Director of Residential Services at NJSD, says, "Upon completion, we had a party to celebrate the opening of the booths. The school superintendent was present. The students were delighted to have a private booth from which they could make calls. Ever since then, the students have used the booths heavily."
SVRS empowers students to contact their professors and counselors and other students, located in other areas of campus, to ask questions, schedule appointments or set up study groups - just as a hearing student would. When both the student and teacher are deaf, they are able to call each other directly, without the assistance of an interpreter, using the same videophone equipment.
Educators can easily use SVRS to contact parents to report students' progress, accomplishments or any concerns or problems students may be having. This type of proactive communication can help students maintain grades and avoid last-minute cramming to pass a class.
Using SVRS is easy and convenient for educators who are investigating teaching opportunities. Initial phone interviews can be conducted using SVRS. That way, deaf applicants can use their first language - ASL - and can avoid unnecessary travel or communicating with potential employers using a TTY.
As the new school year begins, Sorenson Communications salutes deaf educators who empower America's deaf children with language and learning. It is simple to request SVRS and a VP-200. To begin your service visit www.svrs.com Good luck to students and teachers in the coming 2010-2011 academic year.
