Women’s World Deaf Golf Champion: Staying Calm

September 27, 2012

Women’s World Deaf Golf Champion, Melissa Stockton, never had formal golf lessons. Her grandmother taught her. The first time she teed off, at age 11, Stockton hit the ball so far that she hit the people playing on the green in front of her. When Stockton and her grandmother got to the green, the people came back to complain. Stockton hid behind her grandmother in fear. The people said, "This girl hit us." Her grandmother pulled Stockton out from behind her, put her arm around her shoulders and said, "I know! Wasn't that an amazing shot?" She’s been hitting amazing shots ever since. Before winning the World Deaf Golf Championship in Scotland, in 2010, Stockton had never competed and had only played six or seven times a year.

Stockton qualified to compete again as a member of the Women’s U.S.A. Deaf Golf Team at the 2012 World Deaf Golf Championship in Tsu, Japan, to be held Oct. 8 through 12. Her advice for golfers? "Stay calm. If you get upset, you play worse." Good luck Melissa!

Deaflympics: 1924 to 2013

September 24, 2012

Originally known as "The International Silent Games," the Deaflympics were founded in 1924 by a deaf Frenchman, Eugène Rubens-Alcais. Today, the Summer and Winter Games are each held every four years. Sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee, the Games encompass top-level athletic competition and foster pride in the worldwide deaf community. Deaf athletes are distinguished from all others in their special communication needs on the sports field, and in the communication challenges they must overcome to reach that sports field.

In September 2009, more than 4,000 deaf athletes and officials from 77 nations participated in the 21st Summer Deaflympics in Taipei, Chinese Taipei. The 2013 Summer Deaflympics are scheduled to take place July 26 through Aug. 4, in Sofia, Bulgaria. For more information about those games, visit www.sofia2013.com.
