Emergency Situation? Don't Hang Up!
Using Video Relay Service (VRS), deaf people now have the ability to place calls to 911 using sign language. When you use Sorenson as your default VRS provider and keep your address up to date, Sorenson will seamlessly route your 911 call to the most appropriate emergency response center. That response center will send emergency responders to the emergency.
When Sorenson receives an emergency 911 VRS call, it is given priority above other calls. The call is answered by a Sorenson interpreter and immediately connected to a 911 call center. Occasionally, the VRS caller may receive a message from the 911 call center to hold until the next responder can answer the call. It is important to note that this message is not coming from Sorenson, but instead the 911 call center. Hearing people calling at the same time would encounter the same message. Although holding may be stressful during a crisis situation, the VRS caller should not hang up! VRS callers should try to remain calm and wait for the next emergency responder. It is very rare that you would encounter such a message, but the calls are answered in the order they are received and hanging up to redial will simply delay your call being handled.

ntouch PC Changes Workplace Communication
Thomas Cox, a Sorenson Communications customer and an Assistant Design Group Manager for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in Atlanta loves using ntouch® PC. During the past 16 of his 17 years at GDOT, Cox never experienced the convenience of having a videophone in his office. Now, with the Sorenson ntouch PC in the workplace, it is much easier to communicate with his co-workers, clients and the general public who are located offsite. "People are slowly realizing that they can call me anytime now," Cox reports. "Before, they didn't try to call me at all. They would prefer to send me emails." Cox also has a Sorenson VP-200® connected to his TV at home, but enjoys using the ntouch PC for communication at work. "I've had ntouch PC for a few months. It's working really well. For example, I'm a liaison engineer for a 'SmartPhone' research project at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. Before ntouch PC, the research project manager, who is hearing, would only email me. He was not aware that I had the ntouch PC. After explaining and showing him how the ntouch PC works, he now calls me using SorensonVideo Relay Service (SVRS) anytime he has a question, and I can answer his calls on my ntouch PC."
Cox recalls that more than 30 years ago, during his college days at Rochester Institute of Technology's National Institute for the Deaf (NTID), he communicated using a 10-inch black and white television monitor connected with long wires to a telephone inside one of the buildings on campus. Now, in addition to using ntouch PC, he is looking forward to trying ntouch® Mobile, Sorenson's mobile VRS solution. Cox says he feels that when more hearing people get used to the new technology, communication will become easier and more frequent. "I hope I don't get too many calls," he jokes.
